This video was made by my friend Sam from a trip we took up North to Snowbird, Utah for Oktoberfest. (It's the 2nd video out of the two from our trip!) For those of you who don't know what Oktoberfest is, let me tell you a little bit about it. So basically it's a 2 week beer festival. (No, we didn't drink when we were there!) It's held in Munich, Germany during late September and early October. It is attended by 6 million people each year and has inspired numerous similar events using the name Oktoberfest in Germany and around the world, many of which were founded by German immigrants or their descendants. Snowbird ski resort in Utah is one of the many places that holds it.
Only beer which is brewed in the city limits of Munich is allowed to be served in this festival. Upon passing this criterion, a beer is designated Oktoberfest Beer. Large quantitites of German beer are consumed, with almost 7 million liters served during the 16 day festival in 2007! Visitors may also enjoy a wide variety of traditional German food such as: Hendl (chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Wurstl (sausages), Sauerkraut, Weisswurst (a white sausage), etc!
Since 1950, there has been a traditional festival opening: a 12 gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the mayor (Bürgermeister) opens Oktoberfest.
Anyway, that's just some info I found on Wikipedia and some things that I learned from going to Oktoberfest. I hope you enjoy the video! Sam and I had a fun adventure filled with lots of German food, music, dancing the chicken dance and the polka, seeing the Alp horns, snow....and bomb threats. :)
